Providers of post - 14 education opportunities in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area of British Forces' Cyprus
    Who are we?

Vocational Training & Qualifications (VTQ) is part of HQ Joint Educational Training Services of British Forces
in Cyprus (BFC). We have sites located across the Island based at Episkopi, Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

VTQ will make the most of your talents and give you the skills and experiences that employer’s need, and
that will help to narrow the skills gap.  An NVQ is a qualification that will give you choices about your future.
It is at this time we appreciate that you need information and support to help you make the right decisions
    about your future career path.

    What is VTQ all about?

VTQ Youth Training provides young people with the opportunity of undertaking a National Vocational
Qualification (NVQ), by offering a work placement on a training programme, leading to NVQs in levels 2 and
3 in various awards, equivalent to GCSE Grades A* - C and A Levels respectively.

VTQ works in partnership with schools to provide students with opportunities to continue with their six form
studies, as well as working towards an NVQ. This flexible method of learning enables students to gain
valuable work experience and skills whilst achieving other academic subjects at school.

Current NVQ opportunities exist in the following:

    Business & Administration Level 2 & 3
    Performing Engineering Operations Level 1 & 2
    Children's Care, Learning & Development Level 2 & 3
    Hospitality Level 1 & 2

We also offer to adult candidates:

    Management Level 3 & 4
    Youth Work Level 2
    Learning & Development Level 3 & 4
    A1 & V1 Units

    Am I Eligible?

The Youth Training Scheme is available to dependants and spouses of Service and Civilian personnel
posted within BFC between the ages of 16 to 24.

What Are National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)?

NVQs are work-related, competence based qualifications, which reflect the skills, knowledge and
understanding required by an individual to do a job effectively.  They show that people holding these
certificates are competent to do a job not just the theory.  NVQs clearly describe what is expected of people
working in various occupations, and offer the chance to gain a taste of “real work” in a supported way.

There are no exams to sit as NVQs are achieved through the assessment of evidence.  Candidates collect
evidence to prove that they have the competence to meet the requirements of their NVQ.

Assessors will assess candidates' underpinning knowledge, understanding and work based performance
to make sure they can demonstrate competence against the National Occupational Standards which are
expressed in NVQ units. When an Assessor is happy with the competence level of the candidate for a
particular unit, they will sign off the unit. When all the units are signed off, the candidate gains the NVQ.
Even if you don’t finish the whole NVQ, you can still get a certificate which lists the individual units you have
achieved. Then continue your NVQ at the nearest further education provider.

The assessor could be your line manager or someone who is allocated to you from the VTQ Assessment
Team, and they will agree with you when to begin your assessments.  If you don’t meet the standards the
first time you are assessed, you can take time to improve your skills and be assessed again when you are
ready.  Much of your assessment is likely to happen when your assessor watches you carrying out your
work, or looks at examples of work you have completed.  They will also probably ask you questions to check
your knowledge about things you are doing.  Your assessor will explain what you need to do for each unit
and will record this in your Assessment Plan.

    What’s in it for me?

Simply, you’ll earn while you learn! Whilst undergoing training, a weekly allowance is paid (fortnightly) at the
rate of £40.00 Sterling per week (This rate differs for trainees who also attend sixth form as well).
Allowances are paid in Euros converted from the Sterling pound entitlement at the Forces Fixed Rate (FFR)
of exchange. VTQ has had a number of trainees move onto the armed forces or into university on the basis
of them having achieved an NVQ. Unless you have additional income of your own, you will not pay Income
Tax and there are no National Insurance Contributions.
