| Providers of post - 14 education opportunities in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area of British Forces' Cyprus |

The ESBA Virtual College provides a wide variety of post 14 academic and vocational education and training opportunities for British Forces' Cyprus personnel, entitled Ministry of Defence civilians and their dependants based in Dhekelia and Ayios Nikoloas. The ESBA Virtual College is part of the Cyprus 14-19 Partnership, and works closely with other colleagues in the Western Sovereign Base Area, British Forces' Germany and the UK. |
The organisations that provide the education and training opportunities are: 54 Army Education Centre (54 AEC) Cyprus Careers Service Cyprus Youth Service Direct Education Limited King Richard School (KRS) Vocational Training & Qualifications (VTQ) |
Under the guidance of the Cyprus Careers Service, students can select and combine, where physically possible, courses from all, or just some, of the ESBA Virtual College providers to create an individual learning programme to meet their needs. For example: 'Harry' is studying A levels at King Richard School, is training for a level 2 NVQ in Engineering through VTQ, whilst also re-sitting GCSE Maths at 54 AEC. 'Sophie' is currently completing a BTEC First Certificate in Health & Social Care at KRS, is working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Child Care through VTQ with a work placement at a local creche and is re-sitting GCSE Maths at 54 AEC. The many opportunities available at the ESBA Virtual College are not only for young people of school age, but also serving military personnel, MoD civilians and dependants. |
The Cyprus 14-19 Partnership (which includes SCE schools, Army/RAF Education centres, Vocational Training & Qualifications and the Youth Service) has been successful in its bid to deliver a Specialist Diploma in Engineering. Cyprus is the first 14-19 Partnership to have submitted a bid to provide a Specialist Diploma and given the context in which the partnership operates, in a military community overseas, this is a considerable achievement. Last year only 10% of partnerships in the UK were given permission to pilot one of these new qualifications, which are the Government’s flagship qualification to bring together academic and work- relevant experiences for young people. In order to deliver the qualification the partnership has established a link with Anglia Ruskin University, whose Engineering Department will be involved in supporting the delivery of the qualification. The partnership is now drawing up an action plan to start delivering the qualification at its first level from September 2009, with the other two levels being introduced in September 2010. |
